How a 400 year old company thrives through innovation

Riess Aromapot

Riess had a special display at the Vienna Design Week. They showed their new Arompat and the making-of exhibition of “Wie entsteht ein Topf” (How a Pot Is Made)

Riess is a small 400 year old Austrian family business, that engaged designer duo Sofia Podreka and Katrin Radanitsch from Dottings, to rethink their basic Aromapots. Companies like Riess suffer from big competition from Asia or manufacturers that use cheaper materials, than their emailed pots. Time to rethink their approach to the market, or die a slow dead.

The new pots look fantastic, they are pure craftsmanship, but they look very contemporary. The design is very functional and moreover, they have the same price as the former ones, a good example that a newly designed product can both look good and be affordable.

Riess was able to adapt to the new production very fast. Radanitsch: “small companies are faster, they do not have to run every idea through many time consuming levels.”

According to Dottings, product designers have to think about where a product comes from and where it will end in the chain, that is why it is so important to work with true, real materials.
